 | Israel rocks...Hamas is a group of barbarians, and while my heart aches for the non-belligerents caught in the crossfire, I also know that Hamas pulls the usual coward's stunt of using private houses, religious buildings, schools and hospitals for weapons caches (North Vietnam also used to do similar for propaganda value back in the Vietnam War) and firing positions. When Israeli troops shoot back, non-belligerents are in the line of fire, and Hamas gets its propaganda bonus.
Personally, I hope Israel learned its lesson from 2006 and grinds Hamas into the ground! Between Ahmadi-Nejad calling for a new Shoah, the anti-Jewish rantings of Hassan Nasrallah (and 99.9 percent of the imams in the muslim world), the muslims need to learn (and the rest of the world needs to be reminded) that "Never again!" MEANS "Never again!"

What was the alternative?

Look on the bright side the biggest honor for the dead is to become a shaheed and be martyred. That is what they wanted and that that is what Hamas are getting.

One reason is that there is no incentive. The so called Palestinians are the largest welfare recipients in the world both in terms of per person and for the longest amount of time. Individuals and families, often made up ones receive "refugee status" at times for 60+ years! Even in Manhattan you can find a place in 60 years but why should one when they are payed to be called refugees. They are salaried refugees, part time victims, actors, and so on for this mid-East theater. Also, there is no Palestinian culture or people to form a nation with. This is a fact. What Arabs hope is to take what the Jews built and claim it for their own. They cannot do it through force so they try OSLO, suicide attacks, Camp David, road map and now rockets to achieve their ultimate agenda to destroy Israel.
What you have here is not an independence movement, you have a destroy Israel's independent movement! See the difference? The war of Israel's independance rages on. What other nations do people still question it's validity and ironically its one of the oldest existing nations and one that everyone has read about. In fact maybe you notices some religions mention the Jews and Israel.

| | Whether or not Palestine exists isn't quite the point in my view and M.O. mates the fatal leap of generalsing first about Palestinians and then Arabs. There must be a substantial population of Arabs who perceive themselves to be Palestininian. It wasn't that long ago, I believe, that there was no state/ country of Israel and way back the stateless Israelites were oppressed by Egypt. I can't imagine that the mass of ordinary Palestinians either want war, or the destruction of Israel and to live on handouts. I'd imagine most would want to be self-sufficient and at Peace so they could just get on with everyday life. I can see that such brutal military intervention and the death of civilians in disproportionate numbers to the aggressors would only serve to further allienate even moderate Palestinians.
True Moslems are essentially peace loving and living. I think Jewish orthodoxy is based on the first few books of the bible where the law was "lex talionis", which is the law of retribution, and God is vengeful. Love thy Neighbour belongs to the New Testament . I love Gail's image here- the face, (the person? ) buried in the book. History is to be learned from and improved upon , not wollowed in and used to justify present day horrors.

other than the A bomb strikes on Japan...this may stand as one of the most malicious acts of genocide ever perpetrated...and in this case there is no "prolonged war" rationale for the action...
the legacy... (title of the above painting)... of cruelty and "collateral damage" continues in modern conflict to-day and was broadened by the '72 hostage taking in Munich...where innocents were overtly introduced into the equation...kidnapping highjacking and more recently suicide bombing have become the methods of terror...
and since... tit for tat retaliation has become the justification for
the kinds of inhuman military responses as we have seen in Gaza and elsewhere for decades...
i often wonder how we would feel about these kinds of events...if for example the Nazis won the war...or if the Islamists somehow managed to take over Saudi Arabia...
and i think it's a shame that all atrocities of this nature were not and are not punished sternly by impartial international courts... where all acts of genocide should be dealt with equitably regardless of who emerges as the victor of a conflict...

I would rather see Gazans learning how to answer tech support phone calls than fire rockets or watch Farfur the mouse and Nahul the Bee. However, we do not have anyone interested in building something other than villas for Hamas and Fatah thugs.
I am not happy about the bombing of Dresden or the lack of bombing the railways leading to Aushwitz by the US. It was not strategic. Humanity is not strategic I suppose is the lesson of war.
